MySpace is not the prettiest, but the users make it valuable

I hate MySpace. It is ugly and I get the heeby jeebies whenever I use it. It is a pain to navigate and changing your template is not intuitive at all. But who cares, they have millions of users on the site every day.

The reason MySpace is valuable is not because it is the coolest site ever built, but because users chose it as a place to talk and upload their own content. Ditto YouTube which would be worthless if nobody uploaded videos.

So it is more important to make your site friendly to input and user generated content than to try to build the perfect website yourself. Markets are conversations (thanks ClueTrain) and the best sites facilitate conversations.

Does your site promote conversation? Do you allow input from your users? Do you actively ask your visitors for content?

Excellent point, users trump technology, so it's important to GET USERS, GET USERS, GET USERS.  Exactly.  Other social networks like ClutterMe.com that may be technically superior to facebook or MySpace will still lag far, far behind in net worth until they start picking up some users.
