Getting found on the Internet means getting good search results, and the Golden Triangle is the place to be

A lot of people have been asking me about getting search results lately so I thought I would communicate an important concept called the Golden Triangle of Search. A couple of years ago a study was done that tracked the eye movements of over 2000 participants as they did a search. Andy Beal has a good summary of the complete study here.

An important finding was the Golden Triangle. Looking at the image above you will notice that a majority of the eye movements were tracked to the top left side of the page, just under the Google banner. This is the Golden Triangle.

Another strong area was the top of the paid results on the right. This means you can get traffic through paid ads, but you need to spend the big bucks to make sure you are on top- an expensive proposition.

So what does this mean to you? It means you want to be listed in the first 3-5 entries of organic (non-paid) search results, or bid your way to the top of the paid results on the right side. There are several way to improve your organic search rankings like:

  • Having updated relevant content and articles on your site
  • Having inbound links (people linking to your site)
  • Incorporating a blog into your site that you update frequently

Besides search results it is useful to remember that when people visit your site it is wise to have the most important thing you want them to do listed on the top left of the screen.

If you are serious about getting found on the Internet then you must learn to leverage the tools of new media. I describe these tools in detail and how to use them in my latest book Marketing 2.0. It is free for my readers, so check it out.

If someone were looking for you online, could they find you? How are you leveraging new media tools to build your business?
